Outdoor Fun With Mom This Weekend

While we have been cooped up in our homes for quite some time now, many birthdays and even some holiday celebrations have looked very different than any year prior. However, people are finding their silver linings and making the most of what’s around them – including some outdoor fun in the yard.

With spring weather finally starting to make its debut in many areas, it’s the perfect time to get some fresh air and vitamin D, while spending quality time with your children. Ahead of Mother’s Day this weekend, we’ve put together a few fun family activities to do outdoors in the comfort of your own yard (after making mom breakfast in bed, of course.)

Let the kids play with sidewalk chalk

And by kids, we also mean you. Get creative with your very own concrete canvas! Try a collaborative family portrait or capture the landscape in front of you. Maybe you’re as good as these sidewalk chalk artists.

Start a vegetable garden

You don’t even need to take a trip to your local flower shop – start with the vegetables in your fridge! It’s easy to start growing green onions, cilantro, tomatoes, or lettuce. Plus, this is an easy way to get the kids involved with growing and making your own food. This video shows you how to start growing in no time!

Game night

Pull out the board games, cards, and puzzles. Take your usual game night outside. Check out this expansive list of card games for adults and kids!

Get Crafty

Weather not cooperating? Check out this list of crafts that will make you feel connected to nature even when you’re stuck inside! Our favorite is the tiny museum!

Have a picnic

Get your picnic blanket and basket out and have family dinner on the lawn. Bring a game or some music for the cherry on top of a perfect evening. Even better if you’ve used our Rachio Thrive and can do this worry-free of any health impacts from common lawn care products!

Set up an Obstacle Course

Use whatever you have on hand to create an obstacle course to get the whole family moving in your yard. You can make this into a friendly competition by timing each other or breaking up into teams.

Bury a Time Capsule

With it being such a unique time in the world, there’s never been a better opportunity to create and bury a time capsule. Have each family member contribute an item or two, decorate an old shoebox, and bury it in your yard to be opened in five or ten years. What a fun way to commemorate a crazy time that you’ll never forget!

Scavenger hunt

A fun and exciting outdoor activity is to host your own scavenger hunt. You’d be surprised how many items you can do in your own yard to check off the list, and there’s nothing wrong with some friendly family competition! We’ve created a printable scavenger hunt for the whole family to enjoy – check it out for download here
