5 Ways To Be More Sustainable Without Leaving Your House

It’s more important than ever to do our part for the planet. With good reason, so many of us have joined in on the sustainable and eco-friendly movement, taking measures to be kinder to the earth and to reduce our footprints.

To celebrate Earth Day this Wednesday and everyday of the year, we can all make even more of an effort to preserve our beautiful planet without even leaving our homes. We’ve put together five simple ways to live more sustainably, all from the comfort of your home during the quarantine:

Cut down on your use of disposable paper

By replacing your paper towel and paper napkins with washable cloths, you will drastically cut back on your paper waste. If that’s not an option for you, try using less pieces of each per use. You’d be surprised how big a mess one sheet of paper towel can clean up!

Only run appliances when necessary

It may be tempting to hit start on your laundry machine so your favorite WFH outfit gets washed and is ready for use again, but waiting to run appliances, such as your dishwasher or laundry machines, until they are full will help save energy (and it will also save you money at the end of the month!)

Start Composting

Reducing your trash output and making the most of leftover food scraps by taking up composting is a great way to contribute to the greater good of our environment. You may have heard of this and have been intimidated to start (that’s okay!) but it’s easy to make small changes that will contribute to a bigger impact. We love this beginner’s guide on how to start composting at home – thanks, Good Housekeeping!

Save water – indoors and out!

Did you know that the average American household uses 2,000 gallons of water everyday? There are many simple things we can do to save water around our homes. Inside the home, we can do our part by turning the faucet off while brushing our teeth or shaving, timing our showers, or investing in a water-saving shower head. Outdoors, investing in smart technology such as the Rachio smart sprinkler controller can help you optimize your water usage based on weather and soil requirements.

Let the sun in

While we are unable to go to public parks and beaches to enjoy the sun, stay home and open your blinds and curtains to let the sun flow through your windows. Turn off the lights and reduce your electricity usage by taking advantage of the natural light that the earth provides us with. This is a guaranteed way to brighten your day and your mood (and make your home energy more sustainable.)
